Rejuvenated Sydney Dragon Fleet

Around our Dragon sailing states of New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania and West Australia, we are coming to the end of our 2012/2013 sailing season. There have been some highlights this season particularly for NSW which has hosted the Winter Championships on Botany Bay, the NSW Championships and the Pacific Interport Regatta on Sydney Harbour and during the first two weeks of January, the Prince Phillip Cup (aka the Australasian Championships) on Botany Bay. Sesquicentenary of the RSYS

The week-end of 7/8th july 2012, marked the Sesquicentenary of the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron, and as part of that celebration a Classic Boat Regatta was held from the Club on the Saturday. Read more »


Olga White and Misha Mouratov have always been generous in their support of our Dragon sailing in Australia.  They brought their boats out for the Prince Philip Cup in Sydney 3 years ago and participated in our Easter pre-Worlds regatta in Melbourne and then again at the Melbourne Worlds. Regatta Circuits for Dragons

Why do Etchell owners envy the Dragons? Apart from the fact that we have beautifully engineered boats which do not suffer from the ‘eggshell’ slur, we have a fabulous regatta circuit in Europe – You can cruise with your Q7 Audi and Dragon cradled on the German engineered Harbeck trailer from one regatta to another for 9 months of the year. The season kicks off end March with 80-100 odd starters at Douarnernez in Brittany, France. Read more »


Nick Rogers had already won the Prince Philip Cup after six races in his Dragon class yacht, Karabos IX, but he went out to prove a point by sailing in the seventh and final race on the River Derwent today, and notched up an extraordinary fifth win in the regatta, by just two seconds. Read more »

As part of the RSYS Sesquicentenary (150 years) the RSYS will be hosting the pacific rim Interport between Kansie Yacht Club Japan, Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club, Royal Vancouver yacht Club and the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron in October 2012. Read more »

ASCALON. What’s in a Name?

The new owners of Baikal showed no only do they not fear ‘bad luck’ in changing a yachts name, but they are sending challenge to all the Dragon Owners. Experienced Yngling sailors James Hawkins and Andrew Howe, who between them rack up over 30 years one design experience, and in the case of James, significant Dragon experience, have bought Baikal and have renamed it Ascalon. We are delighted that James and Andrew have chosen to ‘upgrade’ to a Dragon. Read more »

A strong entry list for the 2012/12 season on Sydney Harbour sees 13 dragons competing. Martin Burke has already started the season strongly after missing last year, while we look forward to seeing Norm longworth campaign the brand new Thom Thumb III which joins the fleet straight from its builder Ridgeway in Tasmania.
